Matthew grew up in Brisbane graduating with bachelor degrees in both law and science from the University of Queensland. After completing post-graduate studies at QUT, he joined a legal firm in Toowoomba as a junior solicitor before being transferred to their Brisbane office 18 months later. He decided to travel and embarked on a European holiday joining up with some friends in the UK. After deciding to train as a Mathematics teacher, Matthew taught for 4 years in Watford (just outside of London) before moving to Jersey in the Channel Islands to take a position as a Law teacher before teaching across the syllabus and eventually taking the position of Head of the Mathematics Faculty. During this time, he completed a Master of Science (Mathematics Education) degree through Warwick University which was awarded with Distinction. During this time, he also had time to travel extensively through Europe and Africa.
After 12 years overseas, Matthew returned to Australia and recommenced practice in New South Wales with a focus on family law, litigation and dispute resolution, commercial law, and general practice. Returning to Queensland in 2017, Matthew continued his focus on family law, litigation & dispute resolution, and commercial law. In 2018 he completed his Master of Applied Law from the College of Law obtaining majors in both Family Law and Commercial Transactions.
During his studies, Matthew focused on Financial Agreements under the Family Law Act (BFAs) and in particular wrote his final Thesis exploring this area. As a result, Matthew has developed an interest in drafting Financial Agreements including pre-nuptial agreements as well as Binding Child Support Agreements.
Matthew advises clients in a practical manner exploring commercial solutions. Where dispute resolution cannot be achieved, Matthew is a capable litigator with experience in the State Courts as well as the Family and Federal Circuit Courts. He has advised in respect of relocation, complex property settlements involving family businesses, corporate interests, trusts, and bankruptcy.
Matthew is also available to discuss your estate planning needs including Wills, Powers of Attorney, Financial Agreements and referrals to appropriate specialists for tax advice. He has acted for Companies with restructures and a raft of small business tools such as shareholder agreements, partnership agreements, joint ventures, loans, debt recovery, and disputes concerning commercial leases.
Matthew is a member of the Queensland Law Society and the Family Law Practitioners Association.
